4 can’t-miss items for 2025 season

Fans heading to Comerica Park and the Detroit Tigers‘ home opener will have plenty of food options. Around the concession areas, ballpark favorites like hot dogs and peanuts are plentiful, as is Little Caesars pizza.

But there are new items, too, sure to wow fans.

Last week, I had the opportunity to sample new food options at Comerica Park ahead of Opening Day. Each year, Ilitch Sports + Entertainment and the Tigers host “What’s New at Comerica Park” media gathering. The event showcased new food and merchandise as well as upcoming special fan days and other planned events for the season.

For me, of course, it’s about the food. But it’s also about the opportunity to talk to the chefs and food operators.

And one other thing I look for is value — especially with high food costs. You’ll find a few bargains on hot dogs, pizza and beer available in sections throughout the ballpark.

Here are a few highlights not to miss:

Breadless

If you’re not familiar with Breadless, they offer a menu of sandwiches minus the bread at their locations in Detroit and Rochester Hills. Its sandwiches ($15.50), from the Avocado Turkey or Jerk Chicken and Mango (a favorite), are wrapped in greens like Swiss chard or romaine instead of served on bread.

Corktown’s long-standing barbecue joint has two sandwich menu favorites: the Reason with Slows pulled pork and the Yardbird with smoked chicken. New this year is “Put Me in Coach” featuring shredded brisket topped with Kansas City-style barbecue sauce and topped with sliced onion and dill pickles. Sandwiches are $17.99.

Smashburger

From Fairway Packing Co., the smashburger ($13.99) is two beef patties with American cheese, diced onion and special sauce served on a Martin’s roll.

Motor City Melt

In Section 151 at the Blue Moon Bistro is a cheesy and indulgent comfort food. Sandwiched between grilled sourdough garlic bread are mozzarella sticks topped with house-made marinara and provolone cheese.

Throughout many of the Comerica Park concession areas, you’ll find these value items.

  • Hot dog value meal and kids value meals: These come with a hot dog, bag of chips and 16-ounce fountain drink for $9.42. Look for them at Big League Grills near sections 108, 130, 213, 325, 331, 339 and 343.
  • Value Beer: 12-ounce can of beer for $5 in Sections 214 and 333, at the Miller Lite Market near Section 149 and the Blue Moon Bistro near Section 151.
  • Pizza Value Meal: Little Caesars Super Slice (choose cheese or pepperoni) and 16-ounce fountain drink is $11.99 at Little Caesars near Sections 115, 137, 217 and 334.
  • 313 Tuesdays: $3 Hot Dog, $1 Bag of Chips, $3 Water or 16-ounce fountain drink at Big League Grills near Sections 108, 116, 130, 213, 325, 331 and 339, and Portable near Section 147.
