ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Government agencies are warning Alaskans and visitors about disinformation being spread online about the potential eruption of Mount Spurr.
In a press release Thursday, the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) said it — along with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, National Weather Service, local governments and others — had noticed several false or misleading social media posts regarding the Mount Spurr volcano.
Jeremy Zidek with the division says that these posts refer to people panicking and even evacuating, adding that reports of flights being canceled due to the volcano are not true.
“We haven’t seen any impacts to travel, tourism, or recreation here in Alaska because Mount Spurr hasn’t erupted,” Zidek said.
In its daily volcano update, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) noted that activity at Mount Spurr is actually calming down a bit.
Zidek encourages the public to visit websites and social media pages of agencies like the National Weather Service, AVO, and DHSEM for official information regarding the possibility of Mount Spurr erupting.
