Scott Steiner Explains Why He Did Not Want To Be WWE Champion

Scott Steiner has revealed why he was not interested in becoming WWE Champion during the early 1990s.

Speaking to SHAK Wrestling, Steiner addressed comments from WWE executive Bruce Prichard, who claimed the company had considered making Steiner the top champion and even having him win the 1993 Royal Rumble to set up a title match.

“I have heard that, especially with Bruce Prichard saying something like that on his podcast. I think about making me a world champion,” Steiner said.

However, Steiner explained he had no interest in singles success at the time. WWE reportedly wanted him and his brother, Rick Steiner, to face off during the 1993 Royal Rumble, setting the stage for Scott’s solo run. Steiner rejected the idea, saying his main goal was to succeed alongside his brother.

“But there was a thing where, in the Royal Rumble, they wanted us [Scott and Rick Steiner] to go against each other, and at the time, one of the reasons why I got into wrestling was to wrestle with my brother, prove that we’re the best brothers, and wrestle the best tag teams in the world,” Steiner said. “So, I had no interest whatsoever in being a World Champion, the timing wasn’t right.”

While Steiner passed on the opportunity in WWE, he eventually found success as a singles star in WCW. In 2000, he captured the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, cementing his place as a top name in professional wrestling.

How Did Scott Steiner’s “Big Poppa Pump” Character Come To Be?

Scott Steiner spoke about the origins of his “Big Poppa Pump” character and said that it stemmed from real-life frustrations with the wrestling business, specifically the backstage politics that are involved with the industry. Steiner said that the politics in wrestling made him into a more bitter and angrier person, which coincided with his character shift.
