Devin Williams demoted from closer role with New York Yankees

Former Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams has been removed from the same ninth-inning role by New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Boone announced the move prior to the game against Toronto April 27, two days after Williams failed to record an out in a loss to the Blue Jays.

Though it is his only blown save of the season, Williams has been hit hard since joining the Yankees. Though he has four saves, he’s shouldering an 11.25 ERA and a 2.38 WHIP in eight innings this season, He’s given up six earned runs in his last two appearances. Opponents are batting over .400 off his fastball.

With one season left on his contract, the Brewers decided to trade Williams in the offseason before he became a free agent. They acquired pitcher Nestor Cortes and infielder Caleb Durbin in return.

“The good news for Devin is he has everything to get through this and come out better from the other side,” Boone told Yankees media prior to Sunday’s game. “That’s my expectation. Right now, it’s best for everyone to pull him out of that role and try to start building some good rhythm, confidence and momentum.”

Boone added that he fully expects Williams “to be a central figure for us moving forward.”

Luke Weaver will move back into the closer spot he held last year for the Yankees.

Though he saved 65 games with the Brewers from 2022-2024, He allowed a three-run home run to Pete Alonso in the ninth inning of the deciding game in the NL wild-card series with the New York Mets in his last appearance at American Family Field, ending the Brewers’ season.
