AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – After initially delaying gate openings due to the weather forecast, Augusta National Golf Club decided Monday morning to open the gates at 8 a.m.
“Given the current forecast, we will open ticket gates at 8 a.m. and patron parking lots are now open. We will continue to monitor the approaching weather,” Augusta National said. “The grounds will remain open this morning as the weather permits.”
News 12 meteorologists had issued a FIRST ALERT for overnight Sunday and Monday for the risk of flash flood and possibly a few strong to severe thunderstorms.
The Augusta area is in marginal risk (5%) of excessive rainfall and a marginal category (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind from late Sunday through the day Monday.
Monday is scheduled as the first day of practice rounds for participants in the 89th Masters Tournament,
As soon as the Drive Chip and Put National Finals were finished Sunday afternoon, Masters players could be seen on the range at Augusta National.
The tournament begins in earnest on Thursday, and even if players aren’t able to get out on the course Monday, a full day of Masters activities is scheduled.
Those include a news conference with Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley, as well as news conferences with players Xander Schauffele, Justin Hastings, Hiroshi Tai and Bernhard Langer.
