Blues look to inch closer to playoff berth against Edmonton

With three games remaining in the 2024-25 regular season, the St. Louis Blues have their final true test before the inevitable Stanley Cup Playoffs. After finally snapping their 12-game win streak, the focus turns to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Blues, at 43-29-7 for 93 points, are still two points ahead of the Minnesota Wild for the first wildcard position. The Wild still have one game in hand over the Blues, so this is a must-win.

At 44-28-5 for 93 points, the Oilers have been faltering of late with a two-game losing streak. The Vancouver Canucks are hot on their heels, as the third spot in the Pacific Division has yet to be decided. They need this game as much as the Blues do.

Let’s give this game a preview.

Clinching scenario

The Blues have a tough test with the Oilers. After losing 3-1 to Winnipeg on Monday night, short-term memory has to come into play. They have to forget about that devastating loss and try to beat their last three opponents to get the best possible playoff position.

There is a lot at stake in Wednesday night’s contest. The Blues can finally clinch a playoff berth with a win, and if the Calgary Flames lose in regulation to Anaheim. After all of the hills of the roller coaster that this season was, they have a chance tonight to finish this ride on a high note.

Final game of season series

This game has all the makings of a classic and could be a potential second-round matchup should both teams make it past the first round. St. Louis has dominated Edmonton in the season series, losing both matchups. They were able to steal a point in their last meeting on February 4.

The puck drop will a late one, with a 9:00 PM CT start in Edmonton, Alberta.
