Maya Joint has entered the main draw in Madrid after winning her two qualifying rounds. This will be her first clay court tournament of the season after last competing at the Puerto Vallarta Open where she reached the quarter-finals as the second seed.
Her best tournament so far this season was at the Merida Open, where the qualifier won four matches, including a thrashing over fifth seed Donna Vekic, before losing out to Elina Avanesyan in the semi-finals despite taking the first set. Her opponent will be Carlota Martinez Cirez, playing in her home tournament.
The Spaniard has been given a wildcard and hasn’t played much tennis this season. Her world ranking is 244 and her only match this campaign has been a WTA 125k event in La Bisbal d’Emporda where she lost in the first-round.
