Portuguese Nuno Borges edged out Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4 to move into the last 16 of the Monte-Carlo Masters at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Wednesday.
Borges, ranked No 43, will play Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No 6 seed, next. The Portuguese had two match points in the second set and then trailed 4-1 in the decider before rallying for victory.
Borges benefitted from the abandonment of Dane Holger Rune, the No 10 seed (6-2, 3-0) ahead of his victory.
In the previous round of the Monte-Carlo tournament, Martinez Portero, ranked No 51, won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego (6-4, 1-6, 6-2).
