We have been reporting for weeks now the possibility that stores could have a shortage of eggs this Easter, or that the price would be so high that people would not include them in their holiday. Did that hold true? With two days to go before Easter, I went out to “crack” the case.
Easter egg coloring is a tradition for many families, making eggs very much in demand this time of year. About six weeks back, Stewarts put a three-dozen limit on egg purchases to ensure customers who wanted them would find them available. Spokesman Robin Cooper says as supply increased, they did away with the limit a week and a half ago. The cooler was full Friday night at the Saratoga store.
Cooper pointed to Stewarts’ 75-year-long relationship with a local farm that helped keep their prices low and supply high. I asked him if people held off buying because of the price, and he told me, “No, I think we’re right about on par. Our demand’s been strong all through this…The holiday definitely drives demand. But our demand’s been kind of steady all along.”
Price Chopper’s Mona Golub reports that her stores have seen a “traditional demand” for the holiday as well, and that they had enough supply on hand. She was also happy to report that the cost had dropped–a dozen eggs there now under six dollars, she says, and she expects the price will continue to come down.
