Sadie Sink’s ‘Stranger Things’ Costars Show Up for Broadway Opening

Sadie Sink had some very special friends in the audience of John Proctor Is the Villain on Monday, April 14, as the new Broadway play celebrated its official opening night.

Among the stars seated at New York City’s Booth Theatre for the milestone were Sink’s Stranger Things costars Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, Gaten Matarazzo and Finn Wolfhard.

Photographers captured the bunch as they walked the red carpet before the show.

Speaking to PEOPLE before the show, Sink, 22, explained what drew her to the project.

“Kimberly’s writing is so brilliant and truly captures teenagers and such an authentic light and deals with some uncomfortable topics, but in such a digestible, honest way,” Sink explained. “So I’m incredibly more proud of our team and the message that this show has”

John Proctor Is the Villain is written by Kimberly Belflower and directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor. It’s the first Broadway credit for Belflower, a young playwright who has had her work commissioned, produced and developed regionally to great acclaim.

Set in a Georgia high school, the play follows a group of students studying Arthur Miller’s classic play, The Crucible, in their English class — though “young love, sex ed and a few school scandals” are preoccupying their minds, according to an official synopsis. Still, “as they delve into the American classic, the students begin to question the play’s perspective and the validity of naming John Proctor the show’s hero.”

Sink stars in the play as ‘Shelby Holcomb’. She is joined by Nihar Duvvuri (Romeo + Juliet) as ‘Mason Adams,’ Tony winner Gabriel Ebert (Matilda) as ‘Carter Smith,’ Molly Griggs (Hello, Dolly!) as ‘Bailey Gallagher,’ Maggie Kuntz (The Outsiders) as ‘Ivy Watkins,’ Hagan Oliveras (Our Town) as ‘Lee Turner,’ Morgan Scott (Jaja’s African Hair Braiding) as ‘Nell Shaw,’ Fina Strazza (Matilda) as ‘Beth Powell’ and Amalia Yoo (No Hard Feelings) as ‘Raelynn Nix.’

Understudies are Noah Pacht, Fiona Robberson, Shian Tomlinson, Garrett Young and Victoria Vourkoutiotis.

This is Sink’s third Broadway credit, but the first time she’s leading a Broadway play. She previously starred in the 2012 revival of Annie, and was an alternative for Young Elizabeth in 2015’s Helen Mirren-led play, The Audience.

Stranger Things helped catapult Sink into being a household name. Her character, Max Mayfield, was a major focus of season 4, and led to Sink’s roles in The Whale and Taylor Swift’s short film, All Too Well.

Back in January, Sink opened up about the end of her time on the Netflix show, which recently wrapped shooting on its fifth and final season.

“It was really hard, really difficult to say goodbye,” she told host Jimmy Fallon during an appearance on The Tonight Show. “I think 10 years for the whole show. But I don’t know, we grew up on it, grew up with each other, like our audience grew up watching us, and I don’t know.”

When Fallon asked if she took anything from set, Sink admitted she “took a lot,” joking that her home is becoming a “little museum” of Stranger Things memorabilia.

“Well, just like the essentials, you know,” she shared. “I needed Max’s skateboard, which that was actually gifted to me, the skateboard, cool. I’ve got some Walkmans, some Kate Bush cassette sand some vans and stuff. Like, every shoe that she’s worn.”

Tickets for John Proctor Is the Villain are now on sale.
