Series Preivew: Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox: Brayan Bello returns

For much of the winter the Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners were paired in trade rumors. Seattle had pitching but needed bats. The Sox had bats but needed arms. Almost every week there was a suggestion that Triston Casas was on the way out for one of the arms in the stable at T-Mobile Park. As rumors go, sure it made some sense. However it then opened a hole at first base and considering the plans to move Devers to DH were — lets be honest — probably not connected only to the potentially one-year signing of Alex Bregman, there were simply too many moving parts involved.

Almost a month into the season how are these teams doing? The Red Sox are 13-11 (.542) with 108 runs scored and 113 runs allowed for a differential of -5. By contrast the Mariners are 12-10 (.545) with 98 runs scored and 93 runs allowed for differential of +5.

Triston Casas has gotten off to a slow (glacial) start which wouldn’t have helped Seattle (so far). Luis Castillo, often mentioned as the returning player in a swap, has tossed nearly a marathon of innings – 26.1 – of 4.44 ERA / 4.25 FIP and a whopping 1.5 WHIP. The only thing this really tells us is that neither team would have looked at the first month of the season and said “yeah we won that trade” which would be too early to evaluate it regardless.

Added to the Sox corner for the first month: three missing starting pitchers. Brayan Bello, Lucas Giolito, and Kutter Crawford have yet to throw an inning of the 2025 season. Richard Fitts, filling in, soon found himself on the IL as well.

Bello, however, is returning tonight! In four rehab starts totaling 14 innings he’s been, well, he’s been hit. But he also struck out 21. The important thing is that he feels better.

Richard Fitts threw out to 90 feet after the game and felt fine Seems like the Sox really caught a break with that injury.

Kutter Crawford will likely face hitters by the end of the week in Ft. Myers. His return from knee pain has gained some momentum. But still will take time to build up.
