Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) IPL campaign has been a painful run. With six defeats in eight games, CSK’s chances of reaching the playoffs are all but over. Where did things go wrong for CSK? The auction, many say. CSK were a top-heavy side, but they failed to bring firepower to the middle order. Unfortunately for them, the top order didn’t fire in most games, and an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad further added to the misery. While the bowlers did their bit, the batting was too weak to make them win.
With an eye on the future, CSK roped in Dewald Brevis as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. The South African gun is a promising talent, and he could be in line to make his CSK debut against SRH on April 25, hinted Stephen Fleming. The CSK coach, however, said there are other players in the squad who have been with the team since the start so they will look for the best options they can play against the SRH.

“He’s one of the options that we’ll look at. We’ve got other players as well who have been with us for the whole tournament. Brevis is a good addition to the squad, but we just have to manage what we think would be the best team, given the players that have been working away with us, and also look at the impact that Brevis can have. So that’s part of the discussion,” said Fleming.

Fleming also reflected on the poor form of the middle-order batters and said the players are short of confidence.

“It’s a mix of things – maybe confidence is low. The IPL is tough. Players are getting starts – 20s and 30s – but we haven’t converted those into big scores. We’re missing that one 75+ innings that sets up the rest of the team. So the batting order hasn’t quite clicked, and we haven’t had a single performance worthy of our “honours board” this year,” said Fleming.
